By-Laws for the Lamar Chapter of the National Honor Society

 Selection and Induction 

  1. Candidates shall have spent at least one full semester at PHS prior to their selection, and must be members of the junior or senior classes with a minimum cumulative grade point average of 

    a 3.7 on the weighted 5.0 scale OR a 3.5 on the unweighted 4.0 scale. Prospective candidates must complete and return an extracurricular information sheet by the posted deadline (usually late April or early May) to be eligible for consideration.

  2. Academically qualified candidates shall be evaluated in the areas of service, leadership, and character in the fall.       The selection of each member to the chapter shall be by a majority vote of the faculty advisory council.       The FAC consists of five faculty members appointed on a rotating basis by the principal to elect membership, set policy, review by-laws, rule on appeals, and dismiss members.
  3. Final admission to membership shall be by ritualistic public induction in the fall.
  4. Members in good standing shall be recognized commencement by wearing the National Honor Society Stole and special mention in the program.
  5. Membership is not based on race, gender, or social/economic factors.
  6. A student will not be considered for or maintained in NHS if he/she has major discipline infraction(s) during the high school years, including skipping school, endangering others, cheating on school work, flagrant violation(s) of school or civil law or ISS assignments.

 

  • Membership Responsibilities

 

  1. Regular attendance at meeting and induction is required.
  2. Meetings will be help monthly on the first Wednesday of the month in the lecture hall after school.
  3. (In accordance with the By-laws) Failure to attend meeting and induction without prior approval from the advisor(s) may result in probation or impending dismissal from the chapter.       In particular, when a student incurs his/her first unexcused absence from a chapter meeting, he/she will be issued a warning note. After the second unexcused absence, the student will be issued a probation notice. Any following absences will result in dismissal from NHS. Members seeking an excuse from a meeting must submit their request in writing to the Advisor(s) at least one day in advance of the scheduled meeting.       Clarification of absences:
      1. excused
        1. Written notice to the advisor one day in advance of legitimate school absence.
        2. A written note provided the day a student returns from an unplanned illness (following school guidelines).
        3. Sponsored excused extracurricular activity
      2. Unexcused
        1. Jobs
        2. Failure to notify Advisor in writing one day in advance
        3. Any other absence without prior approval from the Advisor(s)
  1. Students must maintain the academic standards under which they were selected; a 3.7 on a weighted 5.0 scale or a 3.5 on the unweighted 4.0 scale.
  2. The FAC has determined that only one period of probation will be permitted for academic improvement during a student’s membership in the Lamar Chapter of NHS. When a student’s GPA falls below the required gpa, he/she will be warned in writing and placed on probation for 1 semester. If a students’ GPA falls below the required gpa in any other semester, the student will be dismissed and must return the certificate and pin and may not regain membership in the future.
  3. Each member will report 12 hours of approved and verified individual or group service per year. A minimum of 4 hours must be group service.
  4. All group service opportunities are a commitment by our organization to meet a specific need in our community. Members will be offered the opportunity to sign up for these projects with at least 2 weeks notice as to the date and time of the service.       Once a member has committed to attending the project it is expected that they will arrive on time, work hard, and represent our organization well. IF a member fails to attend a project they signed up for without either notifying a sponsor or providing a substitute the hours that the member missed will be added to the total required hours for the year.       Members must notify the sponsor by email or personally more than 24 hours prior to the event. If an emergency situation does not allow for notification the member must see a sponsor personally as soon as possible following the project. The sponsor in conjunction with the faculty council may deem that in that particular emergency situation the hours missed need not be an added to the initial service requirement. This decision is completely up to the faculty council.

 

 

Suggested addition to NHS By-Laws for Lamar Chapter
